Restorations
Restorative patients present some very specific home care challenges. If you have had expensive crown work (Caps) you need to pay special attention to the area where the crown ends and the natural tooth begins, the margin of the crown. With bridge work you need to stimulate and clean the gum tissue under the bridge as well as clean thoroughly around the abutment teeth, that is, the natural or implant teeth that the fixed bridge relies on for support. Bridges place additional stress on your natural teeth thereby making it even more urgent that these teeth are supported by healthy gums. If these crucial teeth become decayed your fixed bridge or partial will have to be re-worked, adding to your investment. Another enemy of these critical teeth is gum disease. Gum disease, simply put, can cause the tissue to detach itself from your natural teeth. This detachment may cause the teeth to become loose. When wearing a fixed bridge or partial this can cause discomfort or the inability to chew properly. If the movement is severe enough your smile may even become marred by gaps between your natural teeth. Proper Oral Hygiene is the best defense against gum disease or tooth decay that affect the function and appearance of your restorative work.
To help insure an improved smile, this office stresses the importance of daily brushing and flossing, combined with the proper use of fluorides. Because many of our patients have informed us of time constraints or difficulty in brushing and flossing around their restorations, we recommend the Rota-dent instrument as an alter-native oral hygiene tool.
